SUNSHINE LAW TIPS TO DISCUSS LEGISLATIVE MATTERS

Posted on Jan 31, 2024 in Featured, What's New

Now that all bills have been introduced for the 2024 session, the State Office of Information Practices (OIP) would like to provide Sunshine Law boards with useful reminders as to how they can properly discuss legislative matters.

OIP has a detailed “Quick Review:  Sunshine Law Options to Address State Legislative Issues and Measures,” which explains boards’ various options under permitted interactions and limited meeting provisions.  As discussed in that Quick Review on pages 2, 3 and 4, boards should remember to follow the other Sunshine Law requirements, including the need for a sufficiently descriptive agenda, before discussing legislative matters.  A sufficiently descriptive agenda should describe the specific topic, subject matter, or legislative measure, including bill number if known.  Additional Sunshine Law guidance for agendas and other Sunshine Law requirements are available on the Training page at oip.hawaii.gov.

Finally, another reminder that agencies’ UIPA Semiannual Log Reports and Checklists are due today!  MAHALO!
