HAPPY RETIREMENT, DONALD!

The State Office of Information Practices (OIP) has bid a fond aloha to staff attorney Donald Amano, who retired after seven years of service at OIP.  While we will miss him greatly, we wish Donald a long and happy retirement.

OIP is still seeking an exemption to the State’s hiring freeze to fill two vacant staff attorney positions.  Until we are able to hire and train new attorneys, please be patient with OIP.  With just three staff attorneys, it will take longer to resolve appeals and requests for opinions.  Nevertheless, OIP strives to informally resolve appropriate inquiries within 24 hours through our Attorney of the Day service.  We are also working to update our Sunshine Law training materials based on Act 220, SLH 2021, which allows boards to conduct remote meetings effective January 1, 2022.  We expect to have new remote meetings training ready for boards this fall, so that they will be prepared to implement the new law next year.

Finally, we hope that all agencies have submitted, through their Log Coordinators, their year-end summaries for their UIPA Record Request Log for FY 2021, which were due by July 31, 2021.  OIP’s reports summarizing the State and County results from FY 2020 have been posted on our Reports page at oip.hawaii.gov.
