Salaries of Mayor’s Exempt Employees Public
The OIP recently found that the exact salaries of employees within the Office of the Mayor, City and County of Honolulu, who are exempt from the civil service, must be made public, even though such positions are included in the position classification plan established under chapter 77, Hawaii Revised Statutes. After examining in depth the legislative history of section 92F-12(a)(14), Hawaii Revised Statutes, the OIP concluded that it was the intention of the Legislature that the exact salaries of present or former “exempt” agency employees be made available for inspection and copying, and that only the salary ranges of civil service employees be publicly available.
