Office of Information Practices

The state Office of Information Practices (OIP) continues to shine light on Hawaii’s open government laws with its latest resource, a law review article entitled 2013 Law and Administrative Rules Governing Appeal Procedures of Hawaii’s Office of Information Practices, 36 University of Hawai’i Law Review 271 (Winter 2014).  Written by OIP Director Cheryl Kakazu Park and Staff Attorney Jennifer Brooks, the law review article provides a detailed explanation of the statutory changes effective January 1, 2013, including legislative history, which allow agencies to appeal from OIP’s decisions regarding the state’s Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) and Sunshine Law.  While the law governs judicial appeals from OIP’s decisions, the article also explains the administrative rules that govern appeals made to OIP.
