Posted on Jun 29, 2017 in Featured, What's New

Governor David Ige signed into law today a Sunshine Law bill that requires board packets to be open for public inspection, revises how meeting notices are to be filed, provides a new option for the recordation of meeting minutes, and makes other changes.  House Bill 165, House Draft 1, Senate Draft 2, Conference Draft 1 was signed into law as Act 64 (Session Laws of Hawaii 2017).

After years of disagreement among stakeholders, the state Office of Information Practices (OIP) was able to obtain consensus from the key stakeholders to finally get the bill passed.  The bill was previously summarized in OIP’s What’s New posted on May 1, 2017.

In order to give boards and posting bodies time to learn and implement the new law, there is a delayed effective date of July 1, 2018.  OIP will be preparing new training materials and training sessions in each county in the next few months.
